The UEFA Europa League is the second-tier footballing competition of the European governing union. Since its inaugural season, the competition has been home to some thrilling action. In this post, we look at some of the most amazing stats about this competition.

1. Sevilla Are Five Time Champions

Spanish football club Sevilla might as well be termed the owners of the UEFA Europa League. This amazing team has been able to win the competition a record five times winning it thrice in a row as well. Sevilla’s first title came back in 2006 and the next one followed a year later. The team would go on to fail to qualify for the final of the competition for seven years in a row until 2014 under the management of Unai Emery. They followed this with another two in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

2. Two Managers Have Won It Thrice

Italian legendary manager Giovanni Trapattoni and Spanish Unai Emery are the only two managers to have won the competition thrice. Unai Emery did so, three times in a row with Sevilla while Giovanni’s wins came when he coached Internazionale and Juventus. The two are the managers with the highest number of Europa League titles attached to their names.

3. All-time Top Scorer Has 40 Goals

Unlike its sister competition, the UEFA Champions League that has two players scoring over 100 goals each, things are a little different in the Europa League. Henrik Larsson is the all-time top scorer in the competition with 40 goals. The Swedish striker debuted in the competition in 2004 and scored these goals in a total of 56 games. The goals were scored during his stints at Feyenoord, Celtic and Helsingborg. These numbers mean that the Swedish striker had a goal ratio of 0.714 goals per matched played.
